My final Washingtonian startle was a shop sign: “Correctional Shoe Repairs”. I know a fair few fans of the slipper and plimsoll; how nice that they can get them patched up professionally after serious use.

It has, of course, been pointed out to me that there could have been a different meaning to the shop slogan: not so much repairing shoes used for correcting young ladies, more correcting the young ladies themselves for allowing their shoes to fall into disrepair.
