You probably know that she wrote the story for her lover. He was a married man, married to an invalid, and Pauline lived in fear that she would lose him. She wrote the story in bite size bits which he devoured when he came to her. When I revisit that book I always think of her writing away trying so hard to impress her lover and convince him to come back for the next bit of the story....
