College discipline

One of my searches turned up a piece of news from a college newspaper in the US (not linking, to keep from scaring them needlessly):

A female student’s childish behavior may be getting her a spanking for an incident that occurred in the Fine Arts building.

The student is being charged with physical abuse for allegedly striking a male student in the back of the head and then pulling his hair as he attempted to leave his seat.

Although I suspect she’s not actually getting a spanking, that would be a nice scenario, wouldn’t it.

I guess she’d have to report to the Head of Department (or whatever the American equivalent is called). He would sigh and take a paddle out of his desk drawer.

“Now, Miss Jones. I don’t appreciate having to deal with such childishness from one of my students. I had to borrow this paddle from your sorority in order to deal with you. Bend over and place your hands on your knees.”

She would bend down, jeans tight over her bottom, and her face flaming in shame. With a practiced swing, he would deliver four crisp, hard swats. The force of each one would rock her forward, and she would be crying by the second one.

“Let this be a lesson to you. Return the paddle to the sorority house on your way back.”

Being over the age of 18, Miss Jones would no doubt have to be persuaded that she deserves the punishment. Then she would have to sign the release form and initial it in various places, helpfully highlighted in yellow marker by the helpful assistant to the Dean of Students. This motherly woman would then smile sadly at the young girl before efficiently removing the newly-labeled manilla folder and leaving the young girl to her fate.

Yes, she would indeed have to be persuaded but I suspect that that would not be difficult to do. The Dean would simply give her the choice of being expelled or receiving the paddle. Not wanting the embarrassment of being expelled she would choose the paddle. I suspect that the paper work would be a necessity to keep the Dean and the college from legal issues.

As a journalist, I do have to comment on the incredibly bad writing in that article. I found the original piece– bleh. It seems like the department itself could stand to have some higher standards, and no doubt, some consequences for not living up to them.

As a professor a four-year college, I discovered that it was not unheard of for a coed to be spanked at home. Although I didn’t accumulate any statistics because I was dealing with samples of convenience and had no desire to justify a formal survey to the administration, I nevertheless concluded probabilities seem to increase significantly if the young woman was a freshman living with her mother.

Disciplinary difficulties on campus also seemed to enhance a young woman’s chances of unwanted attention at home. According to a counselor still in touch with a coed after her expulsion for a less than humors campus escapade, the young woman was subsequently spanked by both of her parents!

It seems that if mothers spanked their daughters when they were in high school, they did not stop merely because their daughters matriculated into an institution of higher education or became adults in the eyes of the law.

On the other side of the coin, financially dependent young women accepted their mother’s disciplining because the alternatives were far less attractive. In their cost-benefit analysis of the situation, it was easier to endure several minutes of pain and embarrassment ever so often than it was to assume responsibility for providing their food, clothing, and shelter by working a low-paying job that interfered with both their social life and academic pursuits.

Of course, parental discipline of college coeds is nothing new. My wife found out from firsthand experience when a university freshman! More interestingly, despite decades of reeducating parents, mothers so disposed were still spanking their coed daughters into the early 21st century. Under the radar, some things never change.
