Those of you who live in or visit London will know that the tube’s 150th birthday is being celebrated with a series of striking adverts showing passengers through the ages. Here’s an example:
Amidst the group, there’s a very naughty looking ’60s lass – and two women from further back in time who, to me, appears have naughty gleams in their eyes. Yes, dear Londoners, the tube has ferried cute girls to illicit rendez-vous for decades past!
What it’s missing, though, is a tear-stained young lady in school uniform – perhaps from the early 80s, in blazer and tie. She’d be rubbing her bottom ruefully, having been kept behind after the final class of the afternoon to be caned. She’d have stood on the train, of course: the six fresh weals striping her backside would be too excruciatingly painful for her to even contemplate sitting, even had their been a spare seat. And every stop would have been a challenge, as her fellow passengers brushed past as they boarded and left the carriage.
Oh, and for authenticity’s sake, she’d need to be trembling – knowing that the punishment form in her satchel would need counter-signing that evening by her father, and fearing (doubtless with some justification) that bedtime later would be prefaced by an encounter with his belt…
