Most Houses dealt with misbehaviour at the time. A summons to the housemaster’s study. A discussion of the facts. A lecture. The sentence pronounced. And then the punishment.
Dr Jenkins took a rather different view. After all, a girl might redeem herself: it was her conduct throughout the school year that really counted. And the good might outweigh, cancel out, excuse the occasional lapse.
A girl’s misdemeanours – the things that would have resulted in canings at the time from his colleagues – were carefully recorded in her file in his office. And the final night of the summer term was the time of reckoning: each girl in his House called into his study in turn, her potential punishment list weighed against her exam results and her school report – and judgement duly pronounced…
Excuse my mistrust in Dr Jenkins’ leniency.
Come on, what happened behind the Dr Jenkins’ door? Please, tell us more!
