A lack of focus

The lass next to me on the mid morning train t’other day was working diligently away at her laptop, as I too concentrated on work. One couldn’t help but notice that she was working on some detailed document or other whilst keeping abreast of her business emails.

Only, she seemed to be allowing herself to get very distracted, by the BBC website and her private Gmail.

I imagined the discussion when she reached the office. “Did you get the report finished?” “Not quite.” “But you assured me it would be done by midday, and I’ve promised the CEO that she’ll have it by then.”

There’d be consequences, of course. Painful ones, especially once she’d confessed – being a good and honest girl – to her lack of focus on the train. A dozen with the cane, I think – doubled as this was the second time she’d missed a deadline this year. Administered after she’d finished the work, of course, giving her plenty of time to contemplate what was going to happen *before* she was called in to bend over the boardroom table.
