OK, girls: hands up if the idea of being punished by a tutor at University has ever appealed as a scene idea?
The idea of the supportive but strict academic has long been one of my fantasies. A newspaper travel article’s just pointed me to a quite wonderful site – University Rooms, featuring places like this:
Yes indeed: one really can hire a room in an ancient college. I’m picturing a girl wending her way nervously around the quad (being careful not to walk on the grass, for fear of ending up in still deeper trouble). She’d climb the stairs, knock nervously at her tutor’s study, hands trembling as she opened the door.
Drunken behaviour in college? Breaking a strict curfew during the exam season? Failure to complete an essay on time? Or simply work that was not as good as he knew she was capable of submitting? Whatever the scenario, she’d already have had a final warning, and would be terrified of the consequences. Yet rather than sending her down, he’d have an alternative suggestion, offering her a final final chance in a way befitting the traditions of the establishment. She’d choose to take the twelve strokes of the cane, and would vow not to let him down again.
Now, the rooms on hire for self-catering guests are unlikely to include the senior common room members’ studies, of course. But one could improvise. And whilst student accommodation is often pretty grotty, there’d be no obligation to actually stay there overnight rather than just playing for an evening… although the thought of said student ending up in her tutor’s bed does have a certain something about it…
Does this mean that I can supplement my income next year by sub letting my room in halls to various perverts? As for all those rules? I’m glad I’m going to a less fictional and more liberal uni, where you’re allowed to have boys in your room!

Actually, spanking was used in british univirsities at least until the 1600’s. I think it was burching or caning that was used. There is a short piece in one opf the EETS volumes called The Birched Boy, that was written in the 1500’s i think that describes one boy’s experiences with birching. I don’t think spanking has been part of th Oxbridge curriculum for a couple hundred years, though!
I don’t recognise the college, but if that is Cambridge there are some beautiful rooms for rent. As well as your tutor, you’d be able to end up in the study of the Dean or your Director of Studies, or even the Master… all of which were common daydreams of mine!
