Musical spankings

From the New Yorker’s list of gigs this week;
“Aug 26: The Asylum Street Spankers, a long-standing free-wheeling music group from Austin, Texas”
Now, how did *they* get their name?!
Intriguingly, the listings either side of this are for an all-girl band, Rasputina, who present their “cheekily maudlin chamber rock while dressed in Victorian finery” - and for a gig featuring Belinda Carlisle (an idol in my University years). I could rather enjoy the prospect of the Asylum Street mob being invited backstage to put their name into practice at both gigs
-------Now you can buy a book of the best entries from "The Spanking Writers".
Belina Carlisle was an idol when you were at University? I thought you were WAY older than that?! Wasn’t Ella Fitzgerald more you time?
Eliane - he’s lying. He doesn’t remember back that far, so he’s just picked some random old person and claimed it’s from his University years in the hope that nobody will ever notice.
I remember reading on their web page that a spanker was a wickedly good guitar player. Given the names of their albums and the underwear they sell on their web site, I’m not buying that explanation!
