Yes! That expression in sports always catches me off-guard, too… A lot of my friends are football-buffs (not soccer, but American-big-guy-concussion-causing football…) and every once in a while there’ll be a game on and somebody will use the expression, “They just got spanked!”
I love it – it sheds light unto the subtle (or not-so-subtle) elements of domination and submission inherent in the act (mirrored in sports competitions)…
It’s interesting how in this article, he is also quoted as saying that he thinks this loss could “light a fire under his girls…” Hmm… “his” girls? And what’s lighting a fire under them? The loss itself, or the consequences he imposes on his girls for losing…?
