There be floggings at the bottom of the garden

The ever-so-posh club lounge in our first hotel in Japan had a rather fine print on the wall, depicting “A new building at the end of His Grace the Duke of Kent’s gardens in Bedfordshire”. A little research on the web showed up a copy, dating the plans from the early eighteenth-century:

DukeOfKent

We speculated, as one would, as to the purpose for which the edifice was constructed. Haron was convinced that it was designed as a venue for wild orgies; my own theory was rather harsher.

His lordship was becoming increasingly concerned about slipping standards of service in his house. Traditional methods – the housekeeper’s hairbrush, the butler’s birch – were proving surprisingly ineffectual.

A leading architect was consulted, and commissioned to draw up plans for a new chamber, fitted with all of the necessary equipment to deter – and correct – errant serving girls. Flogging benches, whipping posts, beams from which to suspend ropes – all would feature, amidst more than enough space to swing a cat, whip, birch, cane, strap or whatever implement was deemed appropriate.

At the Duke’s specific instructions, the “Flogatorium” (or “Flagellarium”, perhaps) would be situated far from the main hall. The separation would add to its mystique amongst the staff, and to the fear that a girl would feel if ever called within its doors. And, of course, it would ensure that the cries of those being punished would never disturb the peace of the house’s residents and guests.
