A case for ‘Spankr’

Today’s Observer Magazine has a great article about Grindr, a mobile app for gay men: with the help of GPS it pin-points who nearby is also using Grindr, displays their photos and allows the user to chat to the available guys. There’s apparently a straight version coming soon.

The founder of Grindr talks about his first lonely years as a gay teenager, how he asked himself “the question… every gay man starts asking from the moment he realises he’s gay. You are somewhere and it’s: ‘Who else here, right now, is gay? Who?‘ You are looking around, you are constantly wondering.”

Remind you of anything? It certainly reminds me of the times Abel and I find ourselves in large crowds – concerts, airports etc – and play a “spot a spanko” game. If you believe the urban legend of internet statistics, every tenth person in the world is kinky. Don’t you often catch yourself wondering, who?

I’d love it if there were a kinky equivalent of Grindr – for spanking enthusiasts, or perhaps a pan-BDSM app for wider implementation. Spankr? Fetishr? Kinkr? Either would work. I usually don’t feel much need to talk to strangers, even kinky strangers, but it would be a matter of great comfort to know that they’re there: they’re near.

Oh make it so. I would glady pony up at least $3.99 for such an app, which is probably good because I can’t see there being a Spankr “lite” free app. One can dream.

BTW, Hi. Delurking here. Great blog.

OK, OK, who out there has the necessary technical skills? It should be easy… hack into Grindr, rewrite the code, publish it here? (Erm, actually, maybe it’s not that easy).

@Judy – thanks for delurking, and welcome to our little community of commenters!
