Corrupting the mascots

Anyone else hate the somewhat sinister and freaky Olympic mascots, Wenlock and Mandeville? If you’ve not seen them, they really are ghastly:

Now, to put bad thoughts in your mind whenever you see them in the coming weeks, as you surely will… See, a good friend and I were swapping notes after her recent holiday in the English countryside, when she commented that she’d been punished on her return because of her misbehaviour whilst visiting Much Wenlock.

That, of course, is the small town whose annual athletics events in the Victorian era – organised by the Wenlock Olympian Society – are often viewed as de Coubertin’s inspiration for the modern Olympics.

Hence the name of the mascot.

Hence the fact that throughout the coming games, whenever the ghastly Olympian Wenlock appears, readers of this blog may blush, giggle or simply look distracted at the thoughts of punishments and spankings.

Just trying to help…

I agree Abel, they are truly ghastly and in “the worst possible taste” (to paraphrase Kenny Everett). Mind you, the distraction that you provie may prove to be fun!

They will generate a lot of nightmares among the more sensitive audience members. I think they are horrible.

It’s interesting to see that the mascots really aren’t that prominent anywhere around the Olympic sites. It’s almost as if the organisers have realised that the designs really are dreadful.
