Her Master’s Voice?

So music retailer HMV has gone into administration. Where on earth am I going to buy CDs from if they close down? Don’t tell me I’m going to have to enter the 21st century and download music?

The BBC website had a photo of an old HMV store:

“His Master’s Voice”, selling “Home entertainment and electric housekeeping”. Sounds like there may be the basis of a plan in there. Rename themselves “Her Master’s Voice”; capitalise on the popularity of “Fifty Shades”, and start selling various forms of ‘electric’ ‘entertainment’ alongside a range of suitable disciplinary accessories.

No? Oh well. But I bet UK-based readers will snigger at the thought the next time they pass a still-just-about-open HMV branch!

A sad day. Hell, my CD collection is half full of things purchased from HMV. Sadly, the other half is from Amazon. I guess that sums it up.

When my Dad died, I inherited his record collection. Like ‘Lady of Spain/Outside of Heaven’ by Eddie Fisher with Hugo Winterhalter’s Orchestra & Chorus. On ‘His Master’s Voice’, – with the dog listening to the speaking horn on the label. 78 rpm solid shellac. (never mind vinyl!)

Shellac is a very brittle material.
Imagine the young girl in the new music shop. A gentleman enters.
“Do you have the latest recording by Robert Leroy Johnson?”
The girl shop assistant went weak at the knees. Her hero!
“I’ll go and fetch them,” she exclaimed, running off.
“She’s into blues,” the shop manager explained.
“As am I,” the gentleman remarked.
The shop assistant came running back, only to trip and fall. The shellac records she was holding went crashing to the floor, and were shattered into smithereens.
“I shall hold you accountable for this!” the shop manager bawled.
“It’s only the blues,” the gentleman interjected.
“As will be her young bottom later!” replied the manager.

    Lovely scenario, Steve! Thanks :-)

Ordalie – I’ve tried it once or twice, but love the physical CD (and like having them for the car too).
