Anyone for a Latvian prison?

See this?

It’s a prison. A former KGB prison. In Latvia. “The only military prison in Europe open to tourists”, no less.

But they don’t just show you around – oh no. For at Karostas Prison, you are expected to take part in a “virtual reality” visit, in which you are an inmate and the guards are strict. There’s the daytime tour – and then there’s “Extreme Night”:

Fans of especially extreme adventures are offered an overnight show. You will be able to step into the shoes of a prisoner on a dark and dismal night. Arrival at the Naval Port prison is at 9 p.m., and the show lasts till 9 a.m. The event is intended for groups of 10 or more. Only those who sign a statement agreeing with the conditions of the show will be allowed to participate in it.

You can read more about it here on their official website (although check your sound is turned off, if you’re somewhere public). Or, better, you can watch a six-minute video describing the attraction here on Vimeo. Both are safe for work – but any colleagues noticing what you’re watching might get somewhat curious.

Anyone for a trip to Latvia? After all they do host “Special occasions” – “For those who wish to experience an event that has been tailored to their situation and wishes”.

Now, once you’ve done your homework and watched the video, I’ll post again with some of the very many thoughts that have been running through my mind these past few days…
