The nannies’ uniforms

Apparently there is a posh school for nannies in Somerset, founded in 1892.

They’ve just redesigned their uniforms, and the newspapers last week reported that the redesigned dress and coat represent “the biggest uniform change for 70 years”.

Now, it sounds like a serious sort of establishment where deviation from the norm would be highly unacceptable. And one can scarcely imagine that with students dressed identically from cap to shoes, their underwear would not also be of a standard specification.

Sadly the press coverage failed to show photographs of the demure items that have replaced the bloomers that the girls were required to wear up to now. Nor did it comment on the punishment regime that presumably accompanies the strict morning uniform inspections – the tawsings on outheld hands for minor infractions, the canings from the principal for a second offence in any week. All necessary, of course, to ensure that the offspring of the upper class are looked after by truly disciplined staff…

Hmmm… I dunno… Seems to me that if they are training to be nannies then should be subject to nursery punishments. Mouth-washing for rudeness, and OTK hairbrushings, corner time – after all if they are to utilise these methods with their future young charges, then they should be made well aware of what it feels like to be on the receiving end.

Or maybe that should be one of the classes they are compelled to study……
