‘I’m Lee. Holloway.’

There was an article about Maggie Gyllenhaal in one of last week’s Sunday papers. There were a couple of paragraphs there about ‘Secretary’, including this one about her working relationship with James Spader:

These days, she is guarded about discussing this, saying only that “despite myself, sometimes the dynamic that you are exploring in your work spills into your life”.

I don’t think she meant it the way I’m reading it!

Even though I don’t think ‘Secretary’ is the spanking enthusiast’s ultimate movie, I’m still sort of sentimental about it. This quote works for me in a kinky way.

Oh, I love that movie. How the sub is actually the strong one and the leading one is the relationship. My model!

I don’t know anything about their relationship on the set. But I went to a Q&A with her when the movie was just released. As I remember, she talked a lot about achieving “total release” in her work and in her ‘relationship.’ Maybe it was just me, but there was a clear sexual implication and what she said. James Spader has been a lot of movies about kink.

Hm..I have yet to see this movie, though the movie poster looks quite titillating. Is it a must-rental?

Dave, well, I don’t like it, and it doesn’t titillate me much, but I’d say it’s worth watching to get an opinion. It’ll always be discussed among spankos, that’s unavoidable. For what it’s worth, I have several friends who find lots of good things in that movie for themselves; so you may enjoy it.

I do applaude this movie, although the script linked, what I believe to be a fairly severe emotional problems to spanking/submissiveness; as if it would explained away the normal and common desire for spanking and submission that many women share. At last someone had the guts to tackle the subject matter. ———- But speaking of Maggie Gyllenhaal——– I found this interview on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mrXJlGR7GY) a month or so ago and bloged about it myself. I thought, is was interesting and I wanted to share it -although, you all may already be familiar with this clip. I think Maggie is so cute and her facial expressions are rather telling. I just wonder how tuned into her submissiveness she is, in her day-to-day life. I think at least somewhat and maybe even a lot. -Kate

PS I love reading you both; your blog and your stories are wonderful.

Tamekate – thanks for your lovely comments: that’s very kind of you.

Much as I admire a movie that brought the spanking fetish into mainstream culture, I personally have real reservations about Secretary. I don’t really like the way that her kink seems to be presented as a consequence of her past problems, rather than as being something healthy and wholesome in its own right. I worry that the movie may therefore heighten the prejudices and strengthen the misunderstandings of non-spankos towards those of us who share this kink.

Then again, it has some hot moments, some great dialogue, some excellent acting – and I’m sure it must have persuaded some viewers to recognise and act on their inner desires. So it’s certainly not all bad – I just can’t embrace it wholeheartedly in the way some seem to do.
