Celebrate Roald Dahl Day in style

The Guardian on Saturday has let us know that “September 13, the birthday of the children’s author, has been decreed Roald Dahl Day… and lots of celebrations are planned.”

As we’ve discussed before, the opinion in this household is that Roald Dahl pretty much deserves the title of a patron saint of spanking. Therefore, we’ll be sure to mark his birthday in suitable style. I wonder what all the other people are planning – the ones that the Guardian was referring to?

I suggest public readings from “Galloping Foxley”, followed by re-enactment of the best scenes from “Boy”. There should also be caning competitions, and maybe also a fan-fiction competition.

Any other ideas?

Oooh, thanks for letting us know about this! I’ve been meaning to write about Galloping Foxley since I first read it a year and a half ago, so I think that can be my blog post for the 13th :)

Oh yes… Roald Dahl. I remember reading ‘Boy’ many times when I was young – the sweetshop incident and the prefects giving the choice ‘four with it on, or three with it off….’

    I’m sure he corrupted me!

There was also caning in ‘Danny the Champion of the World’ (on the hands, yuck), and several of the spoilt brats in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory deserved a good thrashing!

I can’t believe I’ve never read Galloping Foxley. I must correct that error asap.. but Boy, ah.. Boy.. good memories. I used to do lots of drama festivals (always was a little show off) and in the Reading category, I often did something from Boy. Never the really good bits though. Shame.

Eliane, Galloping Foxley is a story in “Tales of the Unexpected”. It’s as near to a spanking story as you’re going to get in a mainstream collection.

I read “the good bits” aloud in an English lesson once. I thought it would be a great way to hint to my (young, fit) English teacher what I’d like him to do to me, but he never did get the idea. *sigh*

I’ve never read any of his works, but this sounds like a good time to start.

ROFL Haron! Maybe if you’d worn an excpetionally short skirt and wiggled a bit?
I once did the ‘Somebody’s Farted’ piece from Boy in the school chapel as part of an Assembly, half in the hopes that somebody would take offence and I’d get into trouble. Unfortunately, they all loved it, and just laughed really hard.
